Spending an anniversary apart stings. But with a little planning it can still be one of the most memorable days of the year, sometimes more so, because you had to be creative about it.

Plan the day hour by hour

Treat it like a real date and make an itinerary: breakfast together on a call, a surprise at lunch, a proper dinner date in the evening. Share it in advance so you both look forward to each part.

Send a surprise they can open on the day

Order something to arrive on the morning of your anniversary: flowers, their favourite dessert from a local bakery, or a small gift with a handwritten note. Ask a friend in their city for help if delivery is tricky.

Recreate your first date

Where did you first go? What did you eat? Recreate it from both sides of the screen, down to the same food and the same playlist. Talk about what you each remember, and what you got wrong.

Make a photobooth strip for each year

Take a strip on every anniversary with the same poses. Over the years it becomes a timeline of the two of you. Start this year, even if you're apart.

Write letters to open next year

Each write a letter to the other to be opened on your next anniversary: what this year was like, what you hope for, what you love about them right now. Seal it and keep it somewhere safe.

Look back through your album

Spend part of the evening scrolling through a year of photos, screenshots and strips. Pick a favourite from each month. It's a lovely reminder of how much happened, even at a distance.

Plan your next anniversary together

Where will you be this time next year? Make a plan for celebrating together in person, and write it down. Having that on the calendar makes this year's distance easier.

Keep it about the two of you

It's tempting to go big to make up for the distance. You don't need to. The most meaningful anniversaries apart are usually the ones that feel personal: an inside joke, a memory only you share, an hour of full attention.
